OLD STATION, California — Households in the Hat Creek and Old Station area should check whether their emergency alert registration is current. Shasta County’s public safety communications agency announced that its former CodeRED system would be replaced by AlertShasta beginning May 2024, and told previous CodeRED subscribers to enroll again to continue receiving alerts.
In its official transition announcement, the Shasta Area Safety Communications Agency explained that residents can sign up for public warnings using their contact details. The county sheriff’s official website continues to point people to AlertShasta and Genasys Protect.
Two systems with different purposes
AlertShasta is the county’s warning and notification service. It is designed to send public-safety messages by the communication methods a subscriber registers, such as mobile phone, text or email.
Genasys Protect is a public evacuation-zone and incident-status resource. The county directs residents to protect.genasys.com to search for their address, identify their zone and consult evacuation information when officials post it.
A zone name helps families interpret official instructions. It is not itself an evacuation order. Nor does registering for a text message guarantee delivery during a network or electrical outage.
Steps for an Old Station household
Start from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office or SHASCOM public website to reach the verified registration page, enter current contact information, and check whether household members have other numbers or addresses to include. Then use the official Genasys map to write down the relevant evacuation zone and discuss how to leave if roads become impassable.
The county’s wildfire resources page also links to public alerts and incident maps. A household should maintain more than one source of emergency information, especially in remote areas.
Do not confuse preparedness with an active incident
This article explains existing warning infrastructure; it does not report a wildfire or evacuation order affecting Old Station today. During an active emergency, instructions from responders override general background guidance. Dial 911 for immediate danger.
