OLD STATION, California — Camping near the Hat Creek corridor requires more than finding an empty space on a map. The U.S. Forest Service’s published campground directory shows that campsites along Highway 89 vary in size, drinking-water availability, reservation requirements and operating season.

In an official Lassen National Forest campground information sheet, the Hat Creek Group campground is described as a fee-based group site with reservations required, located along Highway 89. The document lists Rocky and Honn campgrounds nearby and notes no drinking water for those two facilities. These are published facility descriptions, not live booking results.

Different campgrounds, different expectations

A group site should not be assumed to accept an unplanned family arrival. Similarly, a site listed without drinking water calls for a different supply plan from a developed campground with potable water. Visitors should read the current Forest Service page for the exact campground, site type, vehicle limits, fees and reservation rules before driving.

The source document shows seasonal operations for several campgrounds, often spring through October. Because conditions change with weather and forestry work, it should not be treated as proof that a facility is open on November 2, 2026. In particular, fall weather and closure notices can alter plans around Old Station.

Where to verify current conditions

The Hat Creek Ranger District is the local federal information source for Lassen National Forest recreation in this area. Park-bound motorists should distinguish national forest campgrounds from campsites operated inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, where access and seasonal road rules can be different.

If a route uses highways 44 or 89, check Caltrans for current conditions as well as the appropriate land manager for facility status. Forest campground availability does not establish that the Lassen National Park Highway is open for through traffic.

A practical checklist

Before leaving Old Station or setting out for the area: identify the actual campground; determine whether it takes reservations; confirm the opening status and any fire restrictions; check whether drinking water is available; and have a backup destination. These steps are especially important for visitors arriving late in the day or driving a large vehicle.
