OLD STATION, Shasta County — October 28, 2026. The National Park Service advises travelers heading toward Lassen Volcanic National Park through Old Station to check conditions before driving the high-elevation Lassen National Park Highway (State Route 89). Snow can force a seasonal closure as early as October, although the park says its main road typically closes in mid- to late November.
Is the road closed today?
The typical seasonal pattern is not a current closure announcement. Check the park’s official Alerts and Conditions page and Caltrans road updates for verified restrictions on your travel date. Snow, ice and weather can change conditions quickly, and side roads serving Butte Lake, Warner Valley and Juniper Lake may also become impassable.
Where can visitors drive in winter?
When the main park highway closes, normal vehicle access is generally limited to the Manzanita Lake area on the northwest side and the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center on the southwest side. Through-driving is no longer possible on the park highway until seasonal reopening. Road-access details may differ during temporary closures.
Why Old Station is a useful stop
The Park Service names Old Station and Shingletown as nearby areas to obtain fuel on the park’s northwest approach. Visitors are advised to fill up before entering remote park roads because in-park fuel can be seasonal and rangers cannot supply fuel for vehicles that run low.
Check services before leaving
Campgrounds, visitor facilities and access to drinking water can change with seasonal closures. Check both park road conditions and campground information, especially for late-October and November trips. The year-round visitor center may operate reduced winter hours and can close in severe weather.
